We are pleased this week to have our first Guest Blogger, Tedd Luke. Tedd is an artist, graphic designer and webdesigner with a keen eye for collectibles. An avid reader, Tedd enjoys afternoons poking around used book stores as he did just last weekend. Tedd has been kind enough to put a few thoughts down about collecting for us this week;
“Being a pack rat, I collect stuff for my own gratification. I prefer collecting comics, toys, books, and other knick knacks. They bring a sense of comfort to me; they are a visual and tactile stress reliever. On the rare breaks I take, I will stop and read. I will delve into my stack of books, comics, art reference manuals, or my Japanese Manga to take a break from reality. The words, the artwork, or the combination of the two would invoke a sense of calm, excitement, and interest in the story. It would take my mind off the stresses of the world. You can become involved with the characters and what happens to them. You can even pretend to fill their shoes.
With toys, it is a little different. I did not grow up in an affluent family. Sure there were many toys to be had, but, I didn’t have that many. The ones that I did get I tried my best to take care of and make the most out of. From that Atari 2600, to the box of Legos, to the GI Joe, Star Wars, and The Transformers action figures, I had fun.
Now I have a ton of toys and gadgets, from the major video consoles, to a home theatre system, to a remote control car the size of a Matchbox car. My bookshelves are lined with miniature models of jets, spaceships from “Star Trek,” and figurines of many video game and animation. I still sit and imagine that I am on board that starship, or flying that plane. From the books I read, I imagine again what it is like to be in that person’s shoes.
This is a good way to relax and take your mind off of things for a while. It lets the inner child out to play for a while.”
